An online abortion legality survey with 3 design factors (item order, item response labels, location of a neutral response) was randomly assigned to a convenience sample (n = 1,093). Results indicate an interaction effect for item order and response labeling for those identifying as both pro-choice and pro-life; a main effect of neutral response location for pro-choice participants; no significant effects for those identifying as pro-life.

A web-based randomization study was conducted with 1,093 participants to investigate the influence of neutral response choice and location on a social attitude survey about abortion legality. Results indicated that the neutral response option of don’t know may be selected more often than unsure and neither agree nor disagree by some subgroups. Additionally, higher selection of the neutral response option resulted when it was placed in the middle score location versus the end.
