Dr. Amelia Hawbaker (She/Her/Hers) is a Postdoctoral Fellow on the DAMSS team. Amelia holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Indiana University and specializes in qualitative research, organizational sociology, and reproductive health research.
Her research focuses on medical decision-making, pregnancy and childbirth, and the place of organizations in healthcare delivery. She pays particular attention to the social-structural conditions and interactional processes that lead to various reproductive health outcomes. Her dissertation focuses on the intersection between the organizational, institutional, and interactional forces that shape medical situations and obstetric delivery methods. She uses qualitative methods to investigate decision-making in contemporary hospital-based childbirth, and the connected nature of clinical care delivery in U.S. hospitals. Amelia works with university, medical, and state government teams throughout Indiana to increase knowledge around reproductive health and improve service delivery.
