Dr. Kyla Cary (she/her) is a Postdoctoral Fellow on the DAMSS team. Kyla holds a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Michigan State University
Kyla’s research focuses on social determinants of gender-based violence and resultant health correlates. Specifically, she explores how sexual socialization and gendered norms perpetuate sexual violence, and how online social contexts serve both as an avenue for gender-based violence perpetration and a context for public discourse surrounding sexual violence. Her dissertation research focuses on women’s experiences of gender-based violence, particularly sexual objectification, within the online context and associations with body image and mental health. With this program of research, she aims to inform development and implementation of sexual violence prevention programs, sexual health education programs, and interventions for survivors of gender-based violence.
